I was up a Phnom Penh, Riverkids Foundation 2 weeks back with Elaine, a volunteer who offered to come up with a business proposal for the Bright Girls - the graduated Get Ready! Girls who are now training to make little girl clothes and dolls. Though the dresses are getting better, the girls still have a long way to go. The sewing trainer in charge of teaching them mentioned that they will need another 6 months of training to perfect their sewing skills and learn the basics of design and cutting templates pre-sewing. And there's also the training in starting a business.
This left me thinking if we may have been overly ambitious - the girls are young and have quite a way to go before really creating marketable dresses that can be sold in stores/ markets. However, they've skills that we can already use, if we work towards it, to provide them with income.
One thing we thought of was making crochet trimmings. One of the dolls they made had such hand made trimmings sewn onto its dress. Is there a market for crochet trimmings? This is something the girls are already good at and can play around creatively (like liz mentioned in her post on creativity and knitting).
What do you all think? Is there an available market? How do we go about doing this? How do such trimmings sell?
