International Volunteers

Riverkids wants Designers (basically anyone who's got an eye for design and can use photoshop) to design adverts, banners on demand!

This will be an adhoc volunteer opportunity and can be done from home individually or with a group of friends but what we need are COMMITED people who would come forward and say 'YES! we'll cook something up within a set deadline'.

The plan is to have a steady pool of 'RK designers' who can deliver and send us designs - quirky, Riverkid-ish - designs for the shop or for awareness campaigns within a set deadline.

Teach the kids, especially the Get Ready! girls how to cook and also expose them to the various cuisine around the world.

It's a great way to learn different cultures and also a very necessary skill - which i unfortunately lack sorely.

We had a debrief yesterday at the office with the Raffles Junior College teachers regarding their 2-3 weeks service learning trip at Riverkids Foundation and creativity (especially of the Get Ready! Girls) was something that popped up.

Though the girls had great skill in doing craft work, knitting , crocheting, etc, creativity was sorely lacking. Getting them to do craft usually results in all of them making the exact same product as the other, which is good when you're practising your craft skills etc, but not very exciting. Plus, their fear of making mistakes stops them from doing things out of the box.

Poverty mapping of Riverkids' sites gives us an idea of the socio-economic distribution of the area - excellent for identifying areas that need more work on.

It also gives us a bigger picture and a clearer overview of the conditions of the area. 

People who are interested in doing this are encourage to do more research on it and share it with us - preferably via the bulletin - since this is something totally new to us as well.

This would be challenging but very fulfilling as well.

You work on the ground with a Khmer speaking staff or volunteer, interviewing people in communities served by Riverkids - Alexandra and future sites.

You'll need to ask pertinent and sensitive questions like one's income and expenses which not many will be willing to divulge to strangers. So the tough task lies largely with drafting out relevant questions gives us the answers that we need without invading the privacy of the interviewees or making them feel uncomfortable.
